Sgt. Maj. Micheal P. Barrett and the Mendez family, Oct. 15, 2011. Lance Cpl. David A. Mendez Ruiz died from an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Amiriyah, Iraq, Nov. 12, 2005. The Ohio Legislative Service Commission passed a bill which designated part of Pearl Road, which carries the designations of United States Route 42 and State Route 3, commencing at the intersection of that road with Denison Avenue within Cuyahoga County and extending in a southerly direction to the intersection of that road with Memphis Avenue, as the "Lance Corporal David Mendez Ruiz Memorial Highway."
